Christian Spencer was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1977.
Since a young age Christian Spencer was always interested in nature . He started painting professionally in 1996 in Adelaide. In 1998 he moved to a sheep station in an isolated farm in the heart of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia to work and paint.
It was there that Christian Spencer developed his own style, mixing islamic geometry, meso american motifs and tribal art with the harsh beauty of the Australian Outback.
In the year 2000 he moved to Brazil and since 2001 has lived and worked in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state, among the rich biodiversity of the Atlantic Rainforest. The rich natural and cultural history of Brazil had an important part in the development of his paintings, enriching even more his unique style. He has shown his works in many exhibitions around Brazil, Australia and Europe.
In 2006 Spencer starts to investigate new supports for his art and produces his first film, “Itatiaia - a look inside”, winner of many prizes and exhibited in Cinema’s Festivals all over the world.
In 2008 he participated in an Art Residency in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. There he produced the film “Swimming Through Dimensions”, a video art about the alquemical symbols and gothic arquitecture of the town. Theses themes were also represented in his canvas and paper work.
Another film was made in 2011, the “Dance of Time”. This work went into another level technically and his original music added to the artist’s expression and brought the film world recognition throughout the International cinema festivals winning 10 awards.
In 2013, Christian Spencer finished a new audio visual work, “Cerrado Beyond the Mist”, a third piece of a cinematographic trilogy that solidifies an original and artistic way of creating documentaries about Nature. It has won 7 awards.
Recently Christian has been awarded many prizes in international photo competitions, being "Highly Commended" at the Wildlife Photographer of the year 2021, winner in the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2021 in the "Animal Habitat" category, winner in the Tokyo Photo Awards 2020. He also won the best overall photo 2014 and 2015 in the Ecological Society of Australia Photo Competition; winner in World Meteorological Organization photography awards and best photo award in the Canon College photography competition in Brazil in 2017.and also the prize “Fundação Casa da Cultura Macedo Miranda” at the 44º Art Salon of the Museum of Modern Art of Resende - RJ.
At the end of 2022 his book BIRDS Poetry in the sky was released by Teneues publishing in Germany and highlights his artistic way he has approached bird photography.
In his 25 year career Christian Spencer has diversified his supports, using the canvas, film, music and photography to sustain his unique art, a representation of the abstraction that he sees in Nature, capturing the inter-relationship between the micro and macro, “the invisible orquestrated cosmos”.
